A Look at The Sainsbury Centre

'The Sainsbury Centre is one of the most prominent university art galleries in Britain, and a major national centre for the study and presentation of art.'  - Sainsbury Centre

The Sainsbury Centre houses a permanent collection that belonged to Robert and Lisa Sainsbury that consists of over 1400 items each of which sit within a 5000 year period.

It was suggested, by my tutor that I visit in relation to a project at the time so one October weekend a colleague and I went to pay a visit (to view that vlogtober click here). The exhibit suggested was 'Magnificent Obsessions: The Artist as Collector', but we decided to take a look around the permanent collection and come back on another day for the exhibition. It's good to take your time whenever you visit a gallery, museum or exhibition so you can take it all in without being rushed. We also got tickets to a talk that whereby the art of collecting was further explored and discussed.

I will be sure to do a separate post on this also, so keep your eyes peeled. Spoiler alert - it was intriguing and absolutely incredible!

I'll be honest, before having moved to Norwich to attend NUA, I'd never heard of it before, but now it's a place I make an effort to visit regularly. There is so much range within the collection and I always feel inspired and refreshed after every visit. Having studied Art & Design and Fine Art for the past four years in high school it's amazing to recognise works of art I've looked into (I genuinely get giddy with excitement at times). As well as discovering new works and artists/designers it gives me a new found appreciation for art each time.

Nonetheless I don't feel that knowing about art is a requirement to enjoy the collection or any art in fact, it's just something I feel is worth exposing oneself to. Since it's so different to viewing something as a picture or on a screen as opposed to real life. Sometimes a camera just can't capture certain qualities.

So even if you're not near the Sainsbury Centre I urge you to put a date in your diary and go to an exhibition or gallery. I can't say I always understand what's being presented whenever I've viewed certain pieces but I feel it's a good exercise that can broaden your horizons and give you a bit of innovation.  For more information and to see what's on please visit their website here.

Below are some sculptures by one of my all time favourite artists, Henry Moore, and in my vlog you can see just how ecstatic I am to see his work up close and personal.

Just on a side note, as an architecture student I've really come to love the UEA campus that the Sainsbury Centre resides on. I wasn't so keen at first but now it's definitely grown on me. It may not be to everyone's taste but I absolutely love the whole complex, in particular Denys Lasdun's ziggurats as well as the Enterprise Centre - where I attended a wonderful talk by RIBA Royal Gold Medalists O’Donnell + Tuomey (for more on this talk check research journal post here)

Thanks so much for reading,

Margaret xXx
