Birthday Shenanigans

Ticket stub for the 'Split' viewing at Riverside Odeon

So on Sunday January 22nd 2017 I celebrated my birthday and had a smashing time! I spent it with people I love being around doing things I wanted to do. It was super chill with zero drama and just an all round good time. I had decided on a birthday bucket list if you will that included (you'll note they're crossed off because I achieved every single one, to varying  degrees, but achieved nonetheless):

  1. Getting another piercing
  2. Going for brunch
  3. Using all the shots on my disposable camera
  4. Watching 'Split'
  5. Get another record for my modest collection
  6. Documenting it as a video blog
  7. Actually trying to enjoy myself

Something I was adamant on doing was documenting the day on actual film, because, in this digital age, I find that we probably take so many pictures but do very little with them. So by forcing myself to get the photographs developed - the only way to access them - I found that I actually took to displaying them in my room and every time I glance at them I remember a wonderful day, rather than a blank space on a wall.

Also there's a lovely quality to the way light glistens off the shiny paper. I just love them hanging up in my room, especially the copper clips they're held up by! Now I'll take you through some of my favourites. We actually ended up taking about 29 pictures but not many of them got developed, but it was such fun and I think I'm going to get disposable cameras and document things on film more often.

This is probably my favourite photograph from this collection. It's a photo I took on a whim as I walked through Chapelfield Gardens in Norwich, Norfolk on my way to town to the piercing parlour.  I just absolutely love the way the haziness of the morning is captured, the light coming through the trees and casting silhouettes on the ground.  I just find there to be something really magical about it!

This one is of Declan, Emily, Me, Aisha, Dru and Susanna that a kind stranger took for us on the bridge over Riverside after we'd finished watching 'Split'. It was such a great film we thought as a whole and I captured our first reactions on video which I'll link to here, on my YouTube channel. Dru said something about the film and it honestly had me giggling so much. The photo itself isn't amazing but it holds a moment and I''m usually terrible with taking photos of what I'm doing with others in it, so this is such a personally triumph for me. If you look at my Instagram feed its very rare that the photos posted were actually taken on the day they're uploaded.

This one didn't turn out quite right, and so it's rather difficult to make out what's happening.  Declan was completely flipping me off on our walk back home from Chapelfield and it was too dark but I had the flash on and it created this weird hazy blurry mess which I kind of love.

New vinyls; 'Whatever People Say I Am Thats What Im Not' by The Arctic Monkey and 'Back to Black' by Amy Winehouse

I managed to nab two new vinyls for my birthday which I was pretty chuffed about. Three when I include the one Nalini (aka The Bestie) got me as well, but I haven't seen her in person yet - it's 'Aretha: Lady Soul' by Aretha Franklin. I picked up the Arctic Monkeys because they are one of my favourite artists and I want, no need, their entire discography on vinyl. The one I got is one of my favourite ones, Declan argues it's their best, but it's all pretty damn good in my honest opinion. I was actually on the lookout for 'Favourite Worst Nightmare' but I couldn't find and I'm pretty happy to have this one. Nalini, for my 17th got me 'Suck It And See' which has Black Treacle on it, which was the first vinyl I ever owned - so thanks Num!

Here you find my humble record player which was gifted to me by my absolute babe of a friends, you guessed it - Nalini! *round of applause* It's also a CD player, radio and speaker if I plug in an aux. It is an absolute beauty, thus I am eternally grateful to Num for getting it for me and for her and Abby for adding to my collection.

There's something absolute the ritual of playing a record which I really appreciate. There's an extra level of care and anticipation which you don't get when playing music digitally.

My choice of record this time round was 'Back to Black' by Amy Winehouse who is an artist I absolute adore and have been recently obsessed with. I have to say a massive thank you to Emily for gifting this to me, it's os precious and I absolutely love it. This record has some of my favourites on it, from 'You Know I'm No Good' (my cousin Maddy first played me this, years ago), 'Back to Black' and 'He Can Only Hold Her'.

The Ritual; the gentle removal of the record from its sleeve, gently trying to place it on the platter whilst trying to line up the hole perfectly - which I struggle with from time to time - then textured noise you get when the needle touches the vinyl... and then it starts.

Here's a nice closeup of the needle working its magic. I find it all so fascinating and would really love to get to grips with the magic of how it works - what's happening behind the curtain?!

Lastly but by no means least we have a collection of stuff I got for myself and was given. All of my birthday things aren't pictured this is just what I got on the day. So thank you to Aisha for the beauty and skincare stuff you got me I've been smelling amazing. Thank you, thank you, thank you to Susie and Dru for the things they got me, especially the candles, loving those. And I'm currently cuddling Carmen, the purple dachshund. I really like my grey suede backpack that Mother got me so thanks Mamaa - love you! Thank you to me for my avocado t-shirt that I've been living in non-stop and the beautiful fragrance I got from Zara which is just so fresh and Zesty.

... THANK YOU! xXx

And finally I just want to say thank you to everyone who made my birthday so special and wonderful. So thank you to Alex, Belle, David, Declan and Oliver for their love and presence throughout the day, it was much appreciated. Also thank to any of you who took time out of your day to send me birthday wishes.

Thanks for reading - much love,

Margaret
